Before I turned 30 my skin care routine was literally NOTHING. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Not even a regular cleanser.
I remember a few times here and there going on a little spree with a cleanser or something. I had Clean & Clear at one point and Clinique at another, but I wasn’t even close to using any of it everyday and never had any kind of real routine with it. Maybe I was blessed with great skin? I think a huge part of that is because I never got too wrapped up into using too many products.
To be honest, we didn’t have a lot of money and to be honest, I really just didn’t care. I basically just kept something on hand so that when I wore makeup, I could take it off the next day (*achem* I mean – later that night…)
It took me turning 30 and starting to think about a skin care ‘routine’ to start this journey that has lead me into all of this clean beauty and curly hair stuff to be honest with you. It’s crazy to look back now at how it all happened.
Did you know that I was actually an Industrial Engineer??
Yep, I’ve lead operational divisions in industries like Semiconductors and Boat and Paper Manufacturing. When I turned 30 a friend of mine turned me on to skin care, and I started my way down the rabbit hole that led me to all this. I started learning about the ridiculous lack in regulation that exists in industry.
I mean, I had seen if first hand through my work but I truly and genuinely thought that the stuff we put on our skin was at least a little bit regulated?! *SURPRISE!* – It’s not! Like, at all. The legislation that exists that tells personal care companies (think everything from skin, body and tooth care to the tampons we shove up our hoo-ha) what they can do is one and a half pages long.
Only One And a Half Pages?!
Other countries are starting to figure it out. For example, in the European Union over 3,000 ingredients are banned or regulated in the personal care industry. In America, that number is 30…
…I can’t make this shit up.
It’s because of what I started learning back then, that I do what I do now – help every single woman I meet bring consciousness to the things that she buys and the ingredients in them.
NO ONE ELSE IS DOING IT FOR US. Despite what we have been lead to believe.
I could NOT believe that the products on the shelves of basically every store in my town…I mean, in the COUNTRY, were not safe. That Big Business had been pushing politicians into a corner to get their own way. I knew I had to do better. There HAD to be better.
Finding it was the true test. Over the years I have tested HUNDREDS of brands, and it’s been incredibly overwhelming because I am also an environmentalist at heart, and I truly hate wasting product.
My heart was breaking, because I wanted the good stuff. The products that were clean, and safe and beautiful and that ACTUALLY WORKED, but finding them was truly difficult.
Especially when it came to skin and makeup.
Thank the high heavens that the hair care industry isn’t quite as saturated with clean, ethical brands, because finding the best was quite easy there compared to the rest.

My skin gets incredibly itchy from the hot tub, which I find myself in a few ties a week, and I continue to be impressed at how soothing and light this body serum is.
