Welcome to Detox Your Locks!

In this series, I want to introduce you to the may ways to cleanse your hair and remove build-up.

I recommend you take your time as you move through this sequence and focusing on staying conscious, especially to the subtle changes in the wetness of your hair in the days following each cleansing method.

I am going to dive in deeper and demonstrate several of these treatments below and show you how to integrate these strategies into your routine throughout the Hydration Series course, which is a wonderful addition and thorough extension to the material presented here.

Be patient, give yourself grace and track you process and your progress.

The Detox Sequence

When your hair is struggling to take on hydration, your focus will be on the first step to Perfecting The Process: Getting water inside of the hair shaft.

There is something blocking water from getting in the hair shaft and it’s most likely build-up.

How easy the buildup is to remove depends on several factors including the products and methods you’ve used in the past, the extent of their use, the effectiveness of your cleansers on the products you’ve been using, your hair type and damage, your genuine trust in the process.

I recommend you take your time as you move through this sequence, trying just two gentle cleansing method (co-wash, cleanse or double cleanse) and one treatment (ACV, Bentonite, Ascorbic Acid, Malibu C, etc.) a week MAX.

It is important to remember that build-up, especially long term build-up develops in crystallized layers, and that cleansing treatments typically remove just one layer at a time.

The Detox Sequence was designed to put our recommended cleansing treatments in order from gentlest to most aggressive, so that you have the information that you need to make the right decision for you.

The Method

Actionable steps to increase consciousness and hydrate curls.

Do one cleansing a treatment every 7-10 days for the next month, choosing from the selection on the Detox Sequence pictured above, ideally moving from more gentle to more aggressive treatments.

Once build-up is removed (usually 4-6 weeks), these treatments can be reduced to to monthly, and even eventually quarterly, rotating treatments to cover all forms of build-up removal.

During each treatment, follow these steps take the following photos to help you notice subtle changes in the wetness of your hair:

  • Pre-treatment photo while your hair is dry
90 second saturation with water & take a photo (if possible)
90 second saturation with raking & take a photo (if possible)
  • Cleansing treatment & take a photo
  • Love on curls afterward with a hydrating treatment/mask& take a photo (if possible)
  • Take a final photo when your hair is dry.

Apple Cider Vinegar/Kombucha Hair Rinse

I am personally SUCH a huge fan of Kombucha Hair Rinses!

This DIY cleansing treatment is incredibly gentle and it’s acidic nature truly helps to relax the cuticle and smooth and condition the hair, all while removing mild build-up and regulating the natural pH of the scalp.

In fact, this rinse is incredibly supportive and nourishing to the scalp and works wonders on basically any scalp issue from soreness, itchiness, scabbing, oil and flaking.

Kombucha has been made for thousands of years, & is actually the original soda! It is a fermented sweet tea, where a culture of living yeast & bacteria (called a SCOBY – kinda gross, kinda cool) is used to convert sugar to alcohol, and alcohol to vinegar (in the same exact process that apple cider is turned into apple cider vinegar)

You can totally use Apple Cider Vinegar instead { & most people do }, but I personally prefer the added benefit of live microbiome, & the empowerment from brewing it myself, that comes with using Kombucha!

I personally use this cleansing treatment the most out of all of the ones that we have introduced during the Trust your Innersense Challenge, including Ascorbic Acid, Bentonite Clay, and the two Malibu C treatments.

While this treatment is fabulously hydrating, conditioning and nourishing to the scalp and hair, I personally recommend reducing your cleansing treatments as much as possible, ideally reaching for one no more than once a month, though you may need them more frequently in the beginning of your journey, and much less as you transition to cleaner products and your hair has time to recover and truly shine.

To make this recipe, mix 8 parts water and 1 part kombucha (or ACV) and shake well.

I apply directly to my scalp on freshly washed and totally saturated hair, catching the excess in a plastic bowl so that I can rinse my hair several times with it.

I demonstrate this process in the video below.

I followed up the rinse with a deep treatment using Innersense Hydrating Conditioner, and leaving it in my hair with a condition plop for about 15 minutes before I thoroughly rinsed and styled as usual.

Ascorbic Acid Detox

In the video below, I demonstrate one of my absolutely favorite ways to un-funk my hair: The Ascorbic Acid Cleansing Treatment.

I loveeeee this chelating treatment because it’s
SIMPLE – AFFORDABLE – EASY – & HIGHLY EFFECTIVE!

I personally find this treatment works best to remove pool water, hard water buildup and mild cases of product buildup.

Ascorbic acid works to remove oxidized minerals that have bonded to the hair by breaking their covalent bonds and dissolving them.

This treatment is SUPER gentle and can be used frequently if necessary.

I sprinkle about 1 tsp into a large serving size (2 pumps of Innersense) conditioner, carefully place, and then thoroughly massage into the scalp, rake down the length of my hair, and then use a fire starter motion on places with more buildup.

I buy a pouch of powder ascorbic acid on Amazon for about $7.50 and get 20 or so uses out of it.

You can immediately feel it dissolve away buildup on the hair from chlorinated pool water. If you have access to a pool I encourage you to get your hair wet and do this treatment as an experiment.

I think you will find it an incredible opportunity to get more personal with your hair by becoming more familiar with what your hair feels like with and without buildup.

Bentonite Clay Detox

Bentonite has been used for thousands of years by the Aztecs and Egyptians as a skin, hair and digestive detox.

The clay itself is super versatile, I’ve seen it used in hundreds of DIY recipes including face masks, toothpaste, skin & under arm detox, deodorant, and now a hair mask!

I have been hearing a LOT about Bentonite Clay as a hair cleansing treatment, so this week I gave one a try.

I mixed in a glass bowl (avoid stainless & metal) until it was the consistency of cottage cheese and went to town!:

1/3 cup of Bentonite Clay
1/4 cup Aloe Gera Gel
2 TBSP Water
2 TBSP Apple Cider Vinegar

Once the mask is applied you can leave it in for 5-20 minutes, though if you leave it in for longer than 5, I would put your hair up in a plastic shower cap.

The idea is to not let the clay dry, because it makes it more difficult to remove.

I spent about 5 minutes rinsing this mask out with warm water and then followed up with a deep conditioning treatment that I braided into my hair.

The clay reacts with the ACV to create a super alkaline and negitive polarity mask that is incredibly effective in removing heavy metals, minerals and compounds for our hair detox.

I found this treatment to be highly effective, and just a bit more aggressive than the Ascorbic Acid and Malibu C Hard Water Treatments, but not as hard as the Malibu C Un-Do-Goo.

I have yet to test it’s effectiveness on product build-up, but I’ll totally play around with that and report back to you ladies!

I added the Bentonite and Aloe Vera that I used to our Detox Essentials list on our website. If you drop the word “Essentials” in the comments below, I’ll shoot you the link to get there!

Malibu Un-Do-Goo

There is a reason why it’s a salon product used by professionals, often only during a client’s first visit.

The incredibly high pH forces open the cuticle much more than other clarifying shampoos. That is what makes it so effective, but it’s also what makes it so dangerous.

Hair can become extremely tangled and matted after use because of this high pH and the aggressiveness of this cleanser

If your hair is already damaged, say from bleach or heat styling, and it’s high porosity as a result, using this product could make things worse.

No matter how you use this product, it is absolutely critical to condition your hair thoroughly after using it, both to hydrate it, and to help the cuticle re-soften and lay flat once more.

Please use this product with consciousness and only sparingly.

Below you can see a demonstration of a Detox Sequence that I did on one of my very best friends. Keep n mind that she has gone back and done several cleansing treatments since this video was shot, and seen a step change in the wetness of her hair each time.

This is the power of long term build-up removal.
